*All Big E Welcome events are mandatory for all first-year students (including all on-campus residents and commuter students.) Transfer students with less than 30 credit hours are expected to attend. Transfer students with more than 30 credit hours and Regional campus students are welcome to attend the Big E Welcome but will need to email Brandon.mandigo@eku.edu to sign up for the program.

Wednesday, August 17

Big E Move-In 

Your Residence Hall (During your assigned move-in time)

EKU Housing is excited to welcome all new Colonels to their home away from home! Take the morning and afternoon to get settled into your room and get to know your roommate.  Colonel Crew Leaders and residence hall staff will help you check-in and move your belongings into your room.  For more information regarding move-in please visit http://housing.eku.edu.

 

Colonel Parent & Family Sessions

Powell Student Center: 10AM-3PM

Parents and families of new undergraduates are invited to stop by Powell Student Center to speak with EKU staff about the Big E Welcome, how to support their student during their first year, and tips on how to become a successful and informed parent of an EKU student.  

 

Commuter Student Check-In

Powell Student Center: 5PM

Commuter students will check into the Big E Welcome at 5PM on August 17th in the Powell Student Center Lobby. 

 

Meet your Colonel Crew Leader

Designated Locations Around Campus: 5:45PM

Students will meet their Colonel Crew leader at their designated locations around campus. Upon check-in, you will be told where to meet your Colonel Crew Leader. 

 

Class of 2020 Welcome Walk

Keen Johnson Steps: 6:30PM

Students will meet their Colonel Crew leader at their designated meeting spot and will then travel to the steps of Keen Johnson. President Benson will welcome the Class of 2020 to the university and discuss EKU traditions including the new Turner Gate. President Benson will then lead the students down the street and through the Turner Gate as a symbolic start of your collegiate journey at EKU. 

 

Traditions Night

Roy Kidd Football Stadium: 7:30PM

How much EKU spirit do you have? You will not want to miss this fun pep rally atmosphere full of Eastern spirit, athletics and music! Wear your maroon and learn the Alma Mater, chants, and EKU traditions with EKU athletic teams, Student Alumni Ambassadors, and student body president at the EKU football stadium. 

 

Big E Bash

Fitness & Wellness Center: 9PM-11PM

Learn about everything EKU Campus Recreation has to offer at this annual event featuring free food, giveaways, and the classic foam party! You won’t want to miss out.

Thursday, August 18

Breakfast

Playfair

Intramural Fields Stadium: 10AM

Playfair is both an entertainment and team-building event that helps new students make instant campus friendships.  Get to know other members of your class with an energy-packed hour of ice-breakers and team builders.

 

College Open Houses

Check with your Colonel Crew Leader for the specific location of your college open house: 12PM-2PM

The faculty and staff of your college look forward to greeting you and welcoming you to campus!  This will provide a great opportunity to get a feel for your major, what to expect for the next four years, and meet students who share the same interests as you.  If you are an exploratory student you will have the opportunity to connect with faculty and staff from multiple disciplines.

Crucial to the Big E Welcome experience is fostering friendships with your peers.  At this event, your Colonel Crew will take part in community building exercises that will uncover both the similarities and differences you share with fellow Colonels.

Take a tour of campus with your Colonel Crew and find out the best route to your classes and the location of important campus resources.

A Shot of Reality

EKU Center for the Arts: 7:30PM

This great new program combines interactive comedy, audience role playing, facts, and education to give the audience "A Shot of Reality" about the dangers of alcohol facilitated by Mission IMPROVable. The program provides an honest, engaging, humorous and sober new look at alcohol awareness on your campus.

Zero Shades of Gray 

EKU Center for the Arts: 2:30PM

Zero Shades Of Gray sets the tone that sexual assault is black and white. There are no disclaimers, no clauses, and no fine print when it comes to how people feel about being sexually assaulted or raped. It’s serious to the victim, and this seminar helps students understand that this isn’t a victim problem, it’s a problem on all levels. Let’s change behaviors by shifting perceptions: Assault is not a women’s issue, or a men’s issue, it’s a human issue.

You and your roommate will also make some important decisions about sharing your new space. EKU Campus Recreation will host many opportunities for you to explore the numerous options for fitness and wellness they offer!

The New Student Convocation marks the beginning of the new academic year and is your official welcome to the University academic community.  This is a celebration to welcome new students, faculty, and staff back to campus for another great year at Eastern.  Immediately after the convocation, join us for the President’s Picnic featuring free food, festivities, and campus engagement opportunities.

 

WindSync 

Ravine: 6PM-6:30PM 

Hailed by the Houston Chronicle as “revolutionary chamber musicians,” WindSync is a fresh and energetic wind quintetinternationally recognized for dramatic and engaging interpretations of classical music. Gold Medalist in the National Fischoff Chamber Music Competition and winner of the Concert Artists Guild Victor Elmaleh International Competition, this dynamic ensemble focuses on building a connection with audiences through adventurous programming and charismatic stage presence.  Critics and audiences alike rave about programs that expand the wind quintet repertoire with newly commissioned works written for WindSync as well as a wide array of original arrangements of classical masterworks. This meeting will provide you the opportunity to become informed of important policies and procedures that are in place to help build an environment that is conducive to academic pursuit and personal growth.  This meeting is mandatory for all students living on campus.

Board shuttles at Powell Student Center: 8PM-10PM

Join us for an exclusive shopping event at the Richmond Center Meijer featuring giveaways, prizes, and plenty of deals on the perfect merchandise to prepare you for your first year as a Colonel.  Shuttles will leave from Powell Student Center.
