Big E Welcome Schedule

*All Big E Welcome events are mandatory for all first-year students (including all on-campus residents and commuter students.) Transfer students with less than 30 credit hours are expected to attend. Transfer students with more than 30 credit hours and Regional campus students are welcome to attend the Big E Welcome but will need to email Brandon.mandigo@eku.edu to sign up for the program.

Wednesday, August 16

Big E Move-In 

Your Residence Hall (During your assigned move-in time)

EKU Housing is excited to welcome all new Colonels to their home away from home! Take the morning and afternoon to get settled into your room and get to know your roommate.  Colonel Crew Leaders, Residence Hall Staff, and Volunteers will help you check-in and move your belongings into your room.  For more information regarding move-in please visit http://housing.eku.edu.

 

Colonel Parent & Family Lounge & Move In-Day Sessions

Powell Student Center: 10AM-3PM

We look forward to welcoming you and your student to campus on Move-In Day, August 16, 2017. You are invited to visit the Parent & Family Programs Lounge 8:00AM-3:00PM within the Powell Student Center. Light snacks and refreshments will be available to enjoy while you connect with fellow EKU families. Short sessions will be offered 10:00AM-3:00PM, that will help you make the most of your student's transition to EKU, including topics such as residence life to academic success resources. Session details and further information can be found by visiting familyprograms.eku.edu.

 

Commuter Student Check-In

Powell Student Center: 4PM-5:30PM

Commuter students will check into the Big E Welcome between 4PM-5:30PM on August 16th in the Powell Student Center Lobby. 

 

Residence Hall Community Meetings

Your Residence Hall (Check your hallway for directions to your community’s specific location): 5PM-5:45PM

This meeting will provide you the opportunity to become informed of important policies and procedures that are in place to help build an environment that is conducive to academic pursuit and personal growth.  This meeting is mandatory for all students living on campus. 

 

Meet your Colonel Crew Leader

Designated Locations Around Campus: 6PM

Students will meet their Colonel Crew Leader at their designated locations around campus. Upon check-in, you will be told where to meet your Colonel Crew Leader. 

 

Traditions Night

Alumni Coliseum, Roy Kidd Football Stadium: 7:30PM

How much EKU spirit do you have? You will not want to miss this fun pep rally atmosphere full of Eastern spirit, athletics and music! Wear your maroon and learn the Alma Mater, chants, and EKU traditions with EKU athletic teams, Student Alumni Ambassadors, and student body president at the EKU football stadium. 

 

Big E Bash

Fitness & Wellness Center: 8:30PM-11:30PM

Learn about everything EKU Campus Recreation has to offer at this annual event featuring free food, giveaways, and the classic foam party! You won’t want to miss out.

Thursday, August 17

Breakfast

Fresh Food Company-Powell Student Center: 7AM-8:15AM

Students are encouraged to eat breakfast in the Fresh Food Company before starting the day. Students will use their meal plan by swiping their Student ID in the dining facility.

Class of 2021 Welcome Walk

Keen Johnson Steps: 8:45AM

Students will meet their Colonel Crew leader at their designated meeting spot and will then travel to the steps of Keen Johnson. President Benson will welcome the Class of 2021 to the university and discuss EKU traditions including Turner Gate. President Benson will then lead the students down the street and through the Turner Gate as a symbolic start of your collegiate journey at EKU. 

 

Playfair

Intramural Fields/Roy Kidd Football Stadium: 9:45AM

Playfair is both an entertainment and team-building event that helps new students make instant campus friendships.  Get to know other members of your class with an energy-packed hour of ice-breakers and team builders.

 

College Open Houses

Check with your Colonel Crew Leader for the specific location of your college open house: 11AM

The faculty and staff of your college look forward to greeting you and welcoming you to campus!  This will provide a great opportunity to get a feel for your major, what to expect for the next four years, and meet students who share the same interests as you.  If you are an exploratory student you will have the opportunity to connect with faculty and staff from multiple disciplines.

Crucial to the Big E Welcome experience is fostering friendships with your peers.  At this event, your Colonel Crew will take part in community building exercises that will uncover both the similarities and differences you share with fellow Colonels.  

 

Dinner

Zero Shades of Gray 

EKU Center for the Arts: 7:30PM

Zero Shades Of Gray sets the tone that sexual assault is black and white. There are no disclaimers, no clauses, and no fine print when it comes to how people feel about being sexually assaulted or raped. It’s serious to the victim, and this seminar helps students understand that this isn’t a victim problem, it’s a problem on all levels. Let’s change behaviors by shifting perceptions: Assault is not a women’s issue, or a men’s issue, it’s a human issue.

 

Bingo Night

EKU Center for the Arts Black Box Theatre: 9PM

Choice number 1 of the evening! Join us for 10 rounds of Bingo with the chance to win prizes such as an Amazon Fire Tablet or Travel Hammocks.

 

Magic Show

EKU Center for the Arts: 9PM

Choice number 2 of the evening! Come kick back, relax, and enjoy the magic of Ben Seidman. Siedman's performances are jam packed with stand-up comedy, fascinating true stories, and world-renowned sleight-of-hand. His energy and playfulness are contagious as they spread through the audience and he never fails to give a sensational performance.

Through comedy, multimedia, and practical tips and advice, students learn to make values-based choices about alcohol. Widely considered as the "perfect blend" of entertainment and practical message, your students will leave having had a great time, as well as, equipped with safe practices for better decision-making. Let’s change behaviors by shifting perceptions: “Alcohol is not about drinking; it’s about who you are.”

 

Comedy Show

EKU Center for the Arts: 9PM

Choice number 1 of the evening! Come out for a night of laughs from comedian Arvin Mitchell. Mitchell's creative and explosively silly comedy, combined with an array of impressions, stories, gestures, and faces, creates a memorable performance that is sure to please.

Head back to the residence halls and take this opportunity to spend time with your residence hall family and find ways to get involved in Hall Government. Residence hall student leaders will share experiences and ask for your opinions related to shaping your hall community. You and your roommate will also make some important decisions about sharing your new space. EKU Campus Recreation will host many opportunities for you to explore the numerous options for fitness and wellness they offer! Fraternity & Sorority Life will also host informational sessions about Fall 2017 recruitment during this time.

New Student Convocation & President’s Picnic

EKU Center for the Arts: 3PM-6PM

The New Student Convocation marks the beginning of the new academic year and is your official welcome to the University academic community.  This is a celebration to welcome new students, faculty, and staff back to campus for another great year at Eastern.  Immediately after the convocation, join us for the President’s Picnic featuring free food, festivities, and campus engagement opportunities.

 

Meijer Mania (Optional Event)

Board shuttles at Powell Student Center: 8PM-11PM

Join us for an exclusive shopping event at the Richmond Center Meijer featuring giveaways, prizes, and plenty of deals on the perfect merchandise to prepare you for your first year as a Colonel.  Shuttles will leave from Powell Student Center.
